Last month I read the obituary of one of my high school class mates. We weren’t close, I hardly knew him. But it was a small class in a small school in a small town, so everybody knew everybody. He isn’t the first of my classmates to die. But once I read his obituary, his death affected me profoundly.
I never knew it, but Wes and I were the same age. The exact same age. We were both born on the same day, September 28, 1971. And so Wes’s death had an impact on me I didn’t expect. He died of an accidental injury. One minute he was healthy, out hiking with his wife on a Sunday afternoon, celebrating the freedom we all appreciate most on Patriot day. And the next minute, everything changed.
And for any one of us, at any moment, anything could happen. It could have been anyone. It could have been me. And I don’t know about Wes, But I’m not ready. Right now, I’m working 70+ hour weeks. I’ve neglected my family and missed opportunities to tell people that I care about them because I’m doing what it takes to build the largest, most important business I’ve ever been involved in. And 2016 has been the hardest year of my life. I’m tired. I’m stressed. I’m up at 2 am writing a blog post.
There’s an old country song about living like you are about to die. It’s pretty sappy, but it makes a point. We all make choices every day thinking we have time. And maybe we do. But even if you do have time, it’s less than it seems. But listen, don’t live like you’re dying. Live like you’re living. Don’t live exclusively for sensations or achievements. Live to matter.
Matter to those you love, of course. But matter to those who don’t yet know you. Matter to those who will never know you. Not because you’re driven or you feel you have to. But because you’re capable and you know you can.
You have unique value to give the world. No one else can create the solutions and opportunities that you can. And people need that from you. Don’t hold back. Don’t think that you’ve got lots of time. And please, don’t die with your songs unsung.
Live who you are fully today. And if you’re honestly not sure who you are, don’t hesitate to find out. Helping people live fully by expressing their unique value is what I love to do. So join us for free today, keep reading, and contact me (Todd@IncredibleAdvantage.com) for more.
