“It’s the gift that keeps on giving the whole year!” -Cousin Eddie
We’re up to day 10 of the 12 days of Christmas. And these next three blogs are going to give you the greatest tools for your success in 2017. Today, we’re going to cover your daily confirmations, something completely different from affirmations. Daily confirmations are what you do each day to confirm or ensure you're reaching your annual goals.
When you become one of the 1% of people worldwide who both write down their goals and revisit them throughout the year, those goals really stick with you. But the trick to success is to break your year-long goals down into quarter – sized chunks. Then month-sized chunks. Then week-sized chunks. Then day-sized chunks.
We covered the details of this in day four. And I wrote about the importance of daily planning in day five. But bringing both of those together to ensure that your daily activity will add up to the year-long achievement you want means carefully connecting today’s tasks with the big picture.
Your daily tasks shouldn't be overwhelming if you take them step-by-step and do not get ahead of yourself. If they are, go back and revise your 2017 goals before you even start day 1.
Now, all you have to do is plan two to four big goals for the year. Don't worry about the details.
Once that is done, break the tasks and sub-goals that make up those big goals into four fairly equal, chronological parts - one for each quarter of the year. I recommend doing a little more of the work in the first two quarters of the year to build in some margin for whatever may happen. When you have the quarter tasks divided up, you can set those second through fourth quarter plans aside. They don’t apply yet, so you can put them out of mind for now.
Now, all you have to do is achieve your first quarter tasks to ultimately reach your annual goals. You don’t have to think beyond that for the moment.
And once you’ve broken those first quarter tasks into three even months (again, weigh them to the beginning in case something slows you down) you can forget about February and March for the moment.
Now, all you have to do is achieve your January tasks to reach your 2017 goals.
Once you’ve broken your January tasks down into four weeks, you can forget about those next three weeks and focus on only the first one.
Now, all you have to do is achieve this week's tasks to reach your 2017 goals.
Once you’ve broken those tasks down into a prioritized list, you can divide them up by the days and hours you plan to work. Even here, it’s a good idea to weight them toward the front of the week. If you get a little ahead, that’s great. Maybe you can take Friday off or get a start on next week. But if you get a little behind you’ll have more flexibility to make it up as the week goes on. When you have your week planned out, you can forget about every other day and focus on only today.
Now, all you have to do is achieve today's tasks to reach your 2017 goals.
And when today is prioritized, you can focus on only task 1, then task 2, etc.
Now, all you have to do is achieve THIS task to achieve your 2017 goals.
But what if you work in a situation where you’re reactive to the actions of others? What if you have to work around incoming calls or walk-ins without appointments?
If you’re not aware of the amount of time those things take, do a two-week experiment. Measure every minute spent on those tasks for a couple weeks, then add 10 – 20% more time and schedule that time into your day. If a task is interrupted, you’ll know you’ve accounted for the interruption. If you have a slow day, use it to get ahead and prepare for a busy day later. I call this an experiment because you may find that you have to set aside a little more time, or a little less as you go. But two weeks of careful measuring will give you a great starting point for this.
With a little planning up front and along the way, you can tackle big audacious goals with simple daily confirmation. Do these simple steps today, achieve that big goal this year.
And you’ll never again worry about if you got enough done today. Because you’ll know exactly what you need to do each day to reach your big goals and be in the 1%.
